Earth Day 2022: Adventures in a Climate Emergency Kilt

Today is Earth Day 2022.

Earth Day is an annual global event, observed on April 22, that celebrates the environmental movement and raises awareness about pollution and ways to maintain a clean habitat. The theme for this year is ‘Invest in our Planet’ - because a green future is a sustainable and prosperous future, for our children and our children’s children.

To honour Earth Day 22, we wanted to share this story about one of our customers and their wild and wonderful journeys - all undertaken whilst wearing a Slanj Climate Emergency Tartan kilt.

Eoin came to us and purchased a kilt in our Climate Emergency tartan which was designed to highlight the issue of climate change. The blue and green colours in the tartan represent the earth. Red, orange and yellow represent global warming. Grey represents the seriousness of the issue. For every Climate Emergency Tartan product sold, 20% of each sale is donated to Friends of the Earth Scotland, Scotland’s Leading Environmental Campaigning Organisation.

Eoin was kind enough to keep in touch with us and shared images of his once-in-a-lifetime adventures for Rat Race Adventure Sports.

Eoin started with a test pilot adventure in Gambia which involved cycling and kayaking the River Gambia across the country from Senegal to the coast over 5 days to raise money for Movember. This incredible adventure was over approx. 500km from border-to-border and a brave one indeed, especially considering the Gambia River is home to crocodiles and hippopotamuses!

Eoin’s official Rat Race adventure involved cycling, cross-country skiing, running and skating his way down a frozen Lake Khövsgöl whilst fundraising for Children with Cancer UK. Lake Khövsgöl, long regarded as the ‘Blue Pearl of Mongolia’, is a pristine freshwater lake in northwest Mongolia and contains 70% of the country’s freshwater. Considered to be one of the seventeen ancient lakes, it is estimated to be between 2 and 5 million years old and is surrounded by vast larch forests and imposing mountain ranges.

Now more than ever, it is absolutely crucial that we work together, businesses, governments and citizens, to do everything we can to protect the planet and build a green and healthy future. Looking at these incredible photos of Eoin travelling across an ancient frozen freshwater lake in our Climate Emergency tartan, serves as a fitting reminder of how different this beautiful planet may look if we don’t take collective action to save it. There is no Planet B.

Thank you to Eoin for sharing a piece of his amazing adventures for great causes with us.
